When winter finally decides to loosen its grip on the Midwest, it’s time to start thinking about prepping your home for Spring. Much like grabbing a new bottle of sunscreen and prepping the boat, your home needs attention, both inside and out before you can enjoy the sunshine and fun the warmer weather has to offer.
Spring home maintenance is much more than a good deep clean or KonMari organizing spree. Here are a few items that we suggest having on your March home maintenance checklist. If you don’t have time to get to these, check out local resources such as HomeOwnersPlus.net for reliable and recommended vendors in the Lincoln, Seward, Wahoo, and Waverly areas. (Many have larger coverage areas in Nebraska as well!)
□ Inspect all wood trim around windows, doors, railing, and decks. Make or schedule repairs now before spring rains do any further damage to the exposed wood.
□ Grab the binoculars, ladder or camera drone you got from Santa and inspect the roof. Keep an eye out for missing, damaged or loose shingles.
□ Change the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
□ Have your porch, deck and fence cleaned.
□ Check your garden hose for dry rot and replace if necessary.
□ If you didn’t replace any old weatherstripping before winter, consider it now to keep your home’s A/C costs in check during the hot summer months.
□ Clean your furnace. Its put in overtime the last couple of months, so give it some love by cleaning the filter system.
□ Have your gutters cleaned. If you didn’t have a chance for this chore post fall, be prepared to apply some elbow grease and some extra time to make your way around the house.
□ Clean your home’s windows…inside and out, then leave them open for a few hours when you are home. This is an effective way to improve air quality and enjoy fresh spring air!
