HOME Real Estate and Woods Bros Realty agents and staff helped to raise more than $2,000 during the fifth annual Soup or Chili Cook-off for Cancer Wednesday in Lincoln.

The Chili Cook-Off raised $2,025 for the American Cancer Society through $1 voting beans.  Voters were made up of HOME and Woods Bros agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract, HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate. The group has raised a total of more than $10,000 to date.

This year the Celebrity Judge Award went to John Fink of the HOME Real Estate North office for his Smoked Turkey Chili. Celebrity judges were Channel 8 Eyewitness News Anchor Rod Fowler and Greta’s Gourmet Co-Founder Kevin Mandigo.

The People’s Choice Award (with the most beans) went to Jean Piontek and Paul DeVries of the Woods Bros Realty Wilderness Hills office for their Hardrock Baked Potato Soup.

“We’ve had a lot of cancer within our organization, and it’s just affected so many families, so many agents, that we wanted to do something,” HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake said. “This was our way of participating and trying to help find a cure.”

The 2014 participants from HOME Real Estate were: John Fink, North office; Noel Herrington, Cotner office; Chefs Amy Birkholz and Shawndel Polivka and Soup Servers Mitzi Garthright and Jake Grasmick, Pine Lake; and Fran O’Leary, Pioneer Greens. Connie Hain made her “Say Cheese-y Potato Soup” and hosted a photo booth for the Support Services office.

Let’s put the HEAT on cancer

cookoffHOME Real Estate is gearing up for the fourth annual Soup or Chili Cook-off for Cancer Wednesday, February 27 at 11:30 a.m. at 3355 Orwell St. in Lincoln.

Celebrity guest judges this year are: Channel 8 Eyewitness News Anchor Rod Fowler, Country Club of Lincoln Executive Chef Lorin Dagel, and Miss Star City Kalyssa Hoefer. All of the proceeds go to the local American Cancer Society. The group raised about $1,200 in 2010, $1,700 in 2011, and $2,975 in 2012, with $1,840 going to the American Cancer Society and the remainder to support an agent’s transplant fund.

“Cancer has affected so many of our family of agents and employees that we wanted to find a way to support this worthwhile cause and put the heat on cancer,” said HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake.

HOME agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract (NLTA), HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate vote for their favorite soup or chili with purchased voting beans. The winning chef gets bragging rights and his/her name on the Top Chef plaque.

A group of HOME Real Estate agents, staff and affiliates participated July 21 in the Redemption Boogie, a skydiving event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The group jumped in honor of HOME Real Estate Pioneer Greens agent Kathy Dixon’s daughter Kristin Carranza, who is currently under treatment for cancer.

HOME Real Estate agents and staff helped to raise nearly $3,000 during the third annual Soup or Chili Cook-off for Cancer Wednesday in Lincoln.

The Chili Cook-Off itself raised $1,840 for the American Cancer Society through the voting beans and cookbooks sold. An additional $1,135 was raised in a silent auction to go toward a local REALTOR’s lung transplant fund. The group raised about $1,200 in 2010 and $1,700 in 2011.

This year marked the first Celebrity Judge Award, which went to Rachael Pittman and Casey Collins of the Woods Bros Realty Beatrice office. Celebrity Judges were 2011 Miss Nebraska Kayla Batt, KLKN-TV Anchor Rod Fowler, and Sandhills Golf Club Head Chef Jake Thiesen.

The People’s Choice Award (with the most beans) went to Susan Ferris of the Woods Bros Realty Wilderness Hills office. Voters were made up of HOME and Woods Bros agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract, HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate. Entries ranged from sweet and spicy beef chili to even Thai-style chicken soup and potato soup.

“Not only was it a good event to raise money and awareness, but also to fellowship with other REALTORS,” said HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake.

The 2012 participants from HOME Real Estate were: Jan Thomas, Cotner; Donna Shinaut, North; Barb Bulow and Stacy Grooms, Pioneer Greens; Don Dahlquist and Patti Whitbeck, Pine Lake. Larry Melichar represented the Support Services office.

HOME Real Estate agent John Fink was presented with the 2010 Ken Lindhorst Volunteer of the Year Award by the League of Human Dignity.

Fink has been the chairman of the League’s Lincoln Benefit Golf Event and the emcee at the event’s awards ceremony for the past two years, and he is also involved in the League’s auctions.

“I can’t emphasize enough how very important our volunteers are to what we do,” League CEO Mike Schafer said at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. “Without you we would be able to do so much less.”

Fink has been REALTOR since 2002, and he works out of the HOME Real Estate North office. He holds his Graduate REALTORS Institute (GRI) designation and is frequently recognized as a top sales professional.

HOME Real Estate Pine Lake staff member Leslie Kinzie was recently able to donate $2,500 to St. Monica’s, a behavioral health treatment organization dedicated to serving women.

Kinzie won a random drawing through HomeServices Lending’s “Pick of the Pros” contest, in which she earned $2,500 to donate to a charity of her choice.

“It is such an honor to be chosen, just to have your name out there to support your community,” Kinzie said.

HomeServices Lending’s Lincoln Manager Russ Sebek presented her with the donation check Tuesday, accompanied by Gene Brake, CEO of HomeServices of Nebraska and HOME Real Estate.

HOME Real Estate agents Gary Dominguez and June Ring have announced that they will be donating $50 from each closing to the Steve King Foundation, a non-profit, tax deductible, charitable organization established for the purpose of helping the dirt track racing community.

The foundation was established after the death of Steve King of Jetmore, Kansas. Steve died from a brain injury sustained during an accident between turns three and four during a qualifying race for the 2006 Knoxville (Iowa) Nationals.
